Evidence-Based Practice in HR:
What is it?  How do you do it?  And why should you?

Evidence-based practice has increasingly been adopted in a wide range of professions such as medicine, policing, policy-making, social work and education. Its basic principle is that professionals need to make use of the best quality evidence in making professional and practice decisions. While all professionals use evidence relatively little attention is paid to the quality of evidence and the range of sources of evidence available. Evidence-based practice in HR involves asking questions using a six step approach and collecting evidence from four sources: Scientific literature; internal organizational data; stakeholders values and concerns; practitioners’ professional expertise. The main learning objectives of this presentation are to provide participants with an understanding of:

  • The meaning and origins of the idea of evidence-based practice
  • Why professional practice in HR needs to become more evidence-based
  • How you apply evidence-based practice in your work as a HR professional
  • Some common barriers to evidence-based HR and how they can be overcome
  • The personal, professional and organizational benefits of developing an evidence-based practice approach to HR
