Association Update

As 2016 comes to a close we have been reflecting on the past year at HRMAM. This year, the board, staff and members have made great strides towards accomplishing the goals of our Strategic Plan and to ensure long-term success for the Association. It has been a year of change and we are excited to continue building on our successes of 2016.

In October, we announced to the membership that the national body, the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations (CCHRA) was changing its name to CPHR Canada and the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation was changing to Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR). We continue to work with CPHR Canada and the other provincial member associations to implement this change, with the unveiling of the new brand scheduled for early 2017. This is our most effective route to increasing viability, positioning our profession as strategic business advisors and opening more careers options for designates.

Along with the other provincial member associations of CPHR Canada, we introduced two major changes to the CPHR including new paths to obtaining the designation and a new reporting process for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours. To recognize that the current landscape of HR practitioners represent a variety of backgrounds and experience, paths were introduced that do not require a degree and ones that allow graduates of accredited post-secondary institutions to waive writing the National Knowledge Exam (NKE). In October we announced our first four accredited programs in Manitoba.

The new online CPD reporting process came into effect on June 1, replacing the old three-year recertification process. With the annual reporting process, CPHRs are considered to be certified for life unless a breach in the maintenance requirements of the designation occurs. CPHRs are now committed to growing their competence and professional capabilities on an annual basis in order to maintain their status.

Many members have earned the CPHR Candidate title as a result of passing the NKE and though the Post-Secondary Institution Accreditation Program. We look forward to supporting these professionals on their paths to becoming CPHRs.

We continue to promote the CPHR brand through advertising and sponsorships at the provincial level. We are working closely with post-secondary institutions and chambers of commerce; and have sponsored the 2017 Canada Games, which will connect us with youth, the business community and the community-at-large. We will continue to promote the CPHR brand by participating in a national campaign in conjunction with CPHR Canada and the other provincial members associations to launch the national re-brand in early 2017.

Throughout the year we offered numerous professional development and networking opportunities for members including the prestigious HR Excellence Awards, HR & Leadership Conference, annual Legislative Review, Emotional Intelligence training, Workplace Bullying workshop, Drug & Alcohol Policy workshop and many more! As we move into a new calendar year we have a full slate of events lined up covering a variety of timely topics.

As we move into 2017, we will be looking to officially submit our application for Self-Regulation to the Province of Manitoba. Self-Regulation is an important step towards enhancing the credibility of the CPHR designation in Manitoba and creating value for organizations that hire CPHRs.

It has been a remarkable year for us, none of which would have been possible without the contributions of the board, the staff, the committees, our suppliers and our sponsors. We look forward to representing HRMAM well throughout the coming year to advance the human resource profession and drive business excellence.
