Hire Slow, Fire Fast.
When you start thinking about firing an employee, how long does it take you to actually do it? According to Georges Levesque, your rationalization of the decision means the writing was on the wall for months and you chose to ignore it.
Oh yes, you already knew that you should take your time recruiting but act fast when letting an employee go. Of course you knew it.
But do you actually walk the walk?
An average cost of a bad hiring decision can equal 30% of the individual’s first-year potential earnings. Add to that the impact a low performer or someone with the wrong attitude has on the rest of the team, and the result on the bottom line and your culture is obvious. Yet, hiring feels good, it’s an achievement of sorts, so making a quick gut decision feels natural. Firing is, of course, the opposite – a heavy feeling, almost a personal failure, and so – something we tend to dread.
George Levesques doesn’t! After many years of building, managing and restructuring teams nationwide, his approach to letting an employee go is faultless and emotion-free. George is direct. He might make you feel uncomfortable. But spoiler alert: hear him out and you might get an itch to clean up your own team!
