Happy Holidays from CPHR Manitoba!
December 16, 2020

As you all know, 2020 has been a year unlike any other. As we continue to navigate through the ongoing pandemic, the HR profession remains at the forefront and is still being relied upon to lead organizations through these unprecedented times. I want to take a moment to again acknowledge the hard work of HR professionals, who have played a crucial role in helping organizations manage this ongoing pandemic and shine a light on the value of HR to business. CPHRs from coast to coast have been on the front lines of a continuing and daunting challenge to help employers and employees deal with the many challenges they faced daily since March.
I have spent the last nine years promoting the value of HR to business leaders, especially around key business issues like leadership, diversity and inclusion, recruitment and engagement, workplace harassment, the list goes on. But COVID-19 has really highlighted the importance of CPHRs in the workplace. This new reality will remain for some time, and HR professionals will continue to help their organizations adapt and move forward into recovery. This year at CPHR Manitoba: CPHR Manitoba's Board approved a new strategic plan for the association. The strategic plan is based on three pillars:
- Promote the CPHR brand
- Support CPHR development
- Foster public confidence in CPHRs
These pillars will guide the long-term direction for the organization and service as the foundation for annual business plans going forward. Below are some of the things happening around our three strategic pillars.
Promote the CPHR brand We remain focused on certification and the value of the CPHR designation. Over the last year, we invested additional time and resources into reaching potential CPHRs. We continue to engage in strategic partnerships and sponsorships to help increase the demand for CPHRs in the workplace and connect virtually with post-secondary institutions to educate students about pursing the designation. CPHR Canada, and the provincial associations, had record high numbers of exam writers in both June and October. Support CPHR Development When the pandemic hit back in March, CPHR Manitoba began to pivot our professional development and other events from in-person to virtual. It was a bit of a learning curve for all of us, but we were able to execute a number of our events in a virtual platform, including, but not limited to, the Psychological Health & Safety Conference, the 2020 HR Legislative Review, our Annual General Meeting and our HR Excellence Awards 2020. Unfortunately, we were not able to host our annual fall conference in its usual form this year. In place of the annual conference, we decided to offer a virtual conference series throughout 2020-2021, which kicked off with the Future of Work Conference in October. The next three virtual events will focus on trending issues:
CPHR Manitoba also launched a new Career Centre this year. When we began the journey to upgrade our Career Centre in late 2019, the world looked very different than it does today. We saw the opportunity to enhance the member experience with a first-rate job board with features our old job board simply could not support. And as we continue to live in these uncertain times, the Career Centre will only become more important as a resource tool for members with career advice, a free resume review and more. Foster Public Confidence in CPHRs As part of our effort to foster public confidence, CPHR Manitoba implemented a Good Character Attestation for all current and new members of the association. The Good Character Attestation - along with our Code of Ethics and Rules of Professional Conduct - is key to our ability to protect the public interest, promote and maintain the high ethical standards of the profession, and maintain public confidence and safeguard the reputation of the profession. Many professional associations, especially regulated professions, have a reputation test as part of the registration process. This was an important step as we move toward self-regulation. CPHR Manitoba worked with connections in the provincial government in regard to self-regulation, facilitating two meetings with government officials this year to continue to move our submission forward. We also continue to educate the membership about what it means for our organization and the HR profession to be self-regulated. Looking forward to 2021: I know these have been challenging times for members and their organizations, but there is a bright future ahead for our profession. Now more than ever employers of all sizes are relying on our knowledge and our expertise to lead the recovery. We are taking our place at the virtual decision-making table. As CPHR Manitoba continues to move forward with our goals and our mission in 2021, we look to you, our members, to be ambassadors of our association. CPHR Manitoba’s presence and impact in the HR industry is supported by you – help us share our message, extend our brand and carry on the important conversation around self-regulation by supporting your peers and educating your colleagues. Look out for our media campaign coming this January. Thank you to our board, staff, committees, strategic and education partners, suppliers, sponsors and members – our past successes, ongoing achievements and driving force in the HR industry couldn’t be possible without your dedication and support! We wish you all a safe and happy holiday season and look forward to welcoming 2021 together.
