Happy Holidays from CPHR Manitoba!

December 22, 2021

To begin, I want to take a moment to again acknowledge that as business has changed, HR professionals have been there supporting health, safety, dignity and success – one workplace at a time. This ongoing pandemic has not been without its challenges, but I also recognize that many positives came out of the crisis. One of the key takeaways is the importance of belonging to a community. In so many ways, the HR profession stood tall together while apart, demonstrating the courage, innovation and resilience that are intrinsic to our profession.

This year, CPHR Manitoba continued to remain focused on providing the highest level of support to our members and continuing to work toward our mission of advancing the human resources profession. Once again this year, CPHR Manitoba’s activities looked a bit different with our staff primarily working from home all year and all of our events and professional development taking place virtually. Overall, the association had a good year making progress under each pillar of our strategic plan – promote the CPHR brand, support CPHR development and foster public confidence in CPHRs.

Promote the CPHR brand

We remain focused on certification and the value of the CPHR designation. Over the last year, we invested additional time and resources into reaching potential CPHRs. In addition to our usual sponsorships with the Chambers of Commerce throughout the province, this year those efforts included a campaign titled “Are you ready?” which focused on asking if business leaders were ready for the future of work and the role of HR professionals. We developed a commercial that aired on CTV along with static ads that played off our campaign messaging for use on LinkedIn and other web and print media. We also connected virtually with post-secondary institutions to continue to educate students about pursuing the designation. The 2021 Manitoba Business Outlook Survey results showed that awareness of the CPHR designation among business leaders in Manitoba rose from 52% in 2020 to 68% in 2021 with 73% awareness in Winnipeg.

Support CPHR Development

In place of the annual conference, we again offered the virtual PD Passport series, which kicked off with the Future of Work Conference in October and the Diversity Forum in November. The next three virtual events will focus on trending issues:

We also continue to offer a variety of webinars, workshops, the Mentorship Program, the Pre-Approved for CPD program, and learning partnerships to support your development. And this year, launched the Community Building Groups to help you collaborate with your peers and build valuable business relationships, the Walk and Talk program to help students and new grads have a one-on-one connection with an established professional, and the Campus Ambassador Program to continue to build on our ties with the post-secondary programs.

CPHR Canada began a review of the CPHR Competency Framework in the fall of 2019. The current framework was announced in 2013 and like all professions, it’s important that we periodically review the framework to ensure that it continues to reflect the evolution of the profession. The review included focus groups across Canada. The pandemic postponed some of the work, but the new competency framework has been approved by CPHR Canada Board of Directors. The provinces announced the updated competency framework on December 9 and will begin rolling out any required changes in the new year.

Foster Public Confidence in CPHRs

The CPHR designation represents a commitment to a national standard of excellence and sets a benchmark for the practice of effective and ethical human resources. CPHR Canada and the Member Associations have introduced mandatory ethics requirement that all CPHR members must follow as part of their CPD curriculum over each rolling three-year period starting in 2021- 2024. To help support members in obtaining ethics training, CPHR Canada has partnered with Neovox Media and created a four-hour ethics course called Professionals in Grey Areas – How to Make Ethical Decisions.

We continue to work with the provincial government on our request for self-regulation. To aid in this journey, we have implemented some key changes to align us with other professional designations (such as accountants and engineers) by developing a Good Character Attestation and updating our Complaints, Investigations & Discipline process. On May 12, 2021, Bill-19 The Saskatchewan Human Resources Profession Act received Royal Assent by Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty. This completes the enactment of the Bill, which is now called an Act.

Looking forward to 2022:

I know these have been challenging and even exhausting times for members and their organizations, but there is a bright future ahead for our profession. Businesses will continue to evolve and adapt to new ways of working, and CPHRs are best equipped, through their education, experience, and expertise, to help shape the future of work.

As CPHR Manitoba continues to move forward with our goals and our mission in 2022, we look to you, our members, to be ambassadors of our association. CPHR Manitoba’s presence and impact in the HR industry is supported by you – help us share our message, extend our brand and carry on the important conversation around self-regulation by supporting your peers and educating your colleagues.

Thank you to our board, staff, committees, strategic and education partners, suppliers, sponsors and members – our past successes, ongoing achievements and driving force in the HR industry couldn’t be possible without your dedication and support!

We wish you all a safe and happy holiday season and look forward to welcoming 2022 together.
