2013 Rising Star Award

Rising Star Award

The Rising Star Award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in personal performance and commitment to the Human Resource profession through their professional, volunteer, and educational activities. The Rising Star is an HR trail blazer who holds the future of the HR profession in their hands and is lighting the HR community on fire.

Finalist: Cheryl Krestanowich, CHRP

Cheryl is kind, helpful and extremely knowledgeable, but most of all she is genuine and cares for the people around her and for the success of the Fairmont Winnipeg. Where most people feel that their own workload is enough Cheryl volunteers her time to other departments in need. She often helps the Banquets Department when they have to flip meeting rooms in a very short period of time. It is very uplifting for the employees to see that their Human Resources Coordinator would take time out of her very busy day to ensure their success.

One of Cheryl's greatest leadership initiatives of the past 12 months was the implementation of the Talent Factory Program. This program is dedicated to support employees with strong leadership potential. Cheryl put in place a thorough selection process and invited Executive Members to become mentors to the successful applicants. Participants have access to new learning opportunities through Workplace Education Manitoba, Civility Experts and Reframe HR. Talent Factory participants saw their professional growth and development skyrocket. Built from scratch, this program helped generate a pipeline of capable leaders to move up the ladder within the Fairmont and across the company when opportunities arise. The program is now being tested and adopted by several other Canadian properties within the company.

Cheryl stays abreast of all new trends, laws, regulations and policies by reading the HR Reporter, Development Dimensions International weekly training newsletter, the Canadian Payroll Association newsletter as well as Reframe HR and Yvonne Thompson's newsletters. She continues to blaze the trail toward excellence as a Human Resources Coordinator for the Fairmont winnipeg and as a certified facilitator of Development Dimensions International Programs.
