Moments that Matter: What Executive Decisions on Leave Management Signal About Culture, Risk, and Values

Description:

Employee leave decisions are rarely neutral. How leaders respond when employees step away from work sends a powerful signal about organizational values, tolerance for risk, and the true employee experience.

This session reframes leave management from an HR process into a governance and leadership issue. The discussion explores how executive‑level decisions around employee leave influence trust, consistency, reputational risk, and organizational culture.

This session will examine:

  • Leave Management as a Governance Issue – why employee leave demands executive oversight and how inconsistency can expose organizations to legal, financial, and cultural risk.
  • Leadership Signals in Moments That Matter – how decisions made during employee leaves shape trust, fairness, and perceptions of organizational values.
  • Balancing Care and Continuity – navigating competing pressures between supporting employees and sustaining operational effectiveness.
  • The Executive Role in Setting the Tone – how leadership choices, policies, and exceptions establish cultural norms that ripple across the organization.

About the Series:

The Executive Breakfast Series consists of breakfast meetings throughout the year where HR executives come together to discuss important issues and trends affecting their workplaces. Each session includes a presentation on a topic of interest and roundtable discussion with participants.

Executives in non-HR roles are also welcome to join us. Executives are permitted to sponsor a senior staff person to attend but should be in attendance with that staff person on event day. CPHR Manitoba reserves the right to cancel registrations for those not at a senior management level.
