The Accessibility for Manitobans Act

The Accessibility for Manitobans Act (AMA) seeks to identify, prevent and remove barriers for those living with disabilities in Manitoba. It affects all everyone in our province, building on the requirements of The Human Rights Code (Manitoba) to create a made-in-Manitoba solution.

The AMA became law in December 2013 and is now undergoing a review of its accessibility standards that cover the key areas of daily living:

1. The Customer Service accessibility standard addresses business practices and training requirements to provide better customer service to people with disabilities.
2. The Employment accessibility standard will address practices related to employee recruitment, hiring and retention.
3. The Information and Communications accessibility standard will address barriers to accessing information – information provided in print, in person, on websites or in other formats.
4. The Built Environment accessibility standard will deal with access to those areas outside the jurisdiction of The Manitoba Building Code, such as sidewalks, pathways, parks and other aspects of the environment that we design and construct.
 5. The Transportation accessibility standard will apply to public transportation to address barriers Manitobans might encounter while getting to work or school, shopping, socializing and other aspects of daily life.

The Government of Manitoba is working with representatives from the disability community, as well as public and private sector organizations to develop each of the accessibility standards.

Until Friday, January 12, 2018, the public is invited to provide feedback on The Government of Manitoba’s Proposed Accessible Employment Standard Regulation.

Should you wish to notify CPHR Manitoba that you have made a submission, please cc by email at hello@cphrmb causing the subject line: Manitoba Employment Accessibility Standard.

Following the consultation period, the Accessibility Advisory Council will consider all comments and feedback and make revisions to the standard as considered appropriate. The resulting standard will be submitted to the Minister of Families, Honourable Scott Fielding.

To date, The Accessibility Standard for Customer Service is the only standard that has been enacted. Its purpose is to achieve respectful, barrier-free customer service in all Manitoba organizations (including businesses) that have at least one employee.

The Government of Manitoba and its departments

Public Sector Organizations: Crown corporations, regional health authorities, colleges, universities, school divisions, municipalities and government agencies, boards and commissions

Private Sector and Non-profit Organizations: Stores and shops, restaurants, hotels, bars, conference centres, as well as charities, places of worship and non-profit organizations.

Moving forward, each standard will outline specific requirements and timelines for organizations that have a responsibility to eliminate barriers.
