Validation of Professional Experience

The CPHR Experience Assessment is a formal step in earning the CPHR designation. All CPHR Candidates must demonstrate three or more years of professional experience in human resources. The length of experience - three, eight or ten years - depends on the path taken.

But it's not just the length of experience, it's also the type. Experience must be at the professional level, using technical HR knowledge with a level of autonomy. Duties that are purely administrative/transactional requiring no HR knowledge are not considered.

HR practitioners can work toward the Experience Assessment in any sector of the economy: industry, government, public practice, professional associations, education, healthcare, or not-for-profits - essentially anywhere that has a human resources function.

Experience Requirements

Three (3) Years Professional HR Experience - Paths 1, 3a & 4

Experience must be:

  • In Human Resources at the professional level
  • Demonstrate breadth in at least two of the nine functional dimensions or demonstrate complete proficiency in one functional dimension
  • Demonstrate a minimum proficiency in 9 of 44 competencies
  • For a cumulative duration of three (3) years
  • Acquired within the previous ten (10) years
